How did it all begin?
It all started with a casual chat over dinner a year ago. We both wanted to start and run our own business. We were talking about my (Kate’s) sister who had graduated in Illustration and was struggling to get her name out there, and remembering how difficult it was when we graduated several years earlier, and how things hadn’t really moved on. We came up with an idea that would help us to set up on our own, as well as be able to help creative graduates, and new designers.
What are your all time favourite product you have produced?
Together we spent a great deal of time going round all the degree shows, Free Range, New Designers, D&AD New Blood etc, hand-picking our favourite graduate pieces. It’s all about what we like, and love together, which maintains our passion for what we do because we believe in all the work and designers we represent.
What is your biggest achievement to date?
We always set out to launch an on-line shop, but having just secured a shop space for a pop-up to celebrate one year on for us, and a selection of designers we represent is incredibly exciting for us. The prospect of also having a space until November is also being discussed and planned, which we hope will give us good knowledge and understanding prior to taking on a more permanent shop space.
What’s your best-kept secret?
Although we have been good friends for many years, it was still a nice surprise how much we liked the same pieces when scouting the shows, we didn’t even consider we may be on a completely different page when it came to what we liked, but it certainly makes for a much more harmonious working relationship.
What is your dreams/plan for the future?
To be a place where all design graduates come to for promotion, even though we love going round to all the shows and meeting people, being the go-to company for graduates and new designers would be amazing.
To also have one of our designer’s featured in a national publication through our promotion would be a real achievement, and of course to have a permanent shop and gallery, and potentially work-shop space too would pretty much mean living the dream, not too much to ask!
Do you have any top tips to help other creative sellers?
Keep at it! Never expect to sell out in the first week. There are hundreds of creative sellers out there with the emergence of sites like Etsy and Folksy, so sometimes finding your niche can be hard work, but perseverance does pay off. We are coming to the end of our first year as a creative business, and it’s only now that we are seeing our hard work pay off.
Building a network with other sellers is also important, even if they are competition; you need to be aware of what they are doing to make that differentiation.
